The Sakhir circuit hosted the final round of the FIA World Endurance Championship 2023, the 8 Hours of Bahrain, which saw Davide Rigon at the start behind the wheel of AF Corse’s No. 45 Ferrari 488 GTE alongside Thomas Flohr and Francesco Castellacci.
Davide, fresh from his success at the 6 Hours of Fuji in September, defended his third position in the Drivers’ standings by crossing the finish line in fourth position taking the start from seventh place. A race that was certainly not easy both for the high temperatures recorded during the weekend and for the “ballast” assigned precisely as a result of the victory in Japan: 20 kilograms of weight added to the number 54 Ferrari were felt especially related to tire management.
“I am overjoyed to have reached this milestone, which was by no means a foregone conclusion considering the extra 20 kilograms of ballast. It was a very intense eight hours of racing with no safety car. It was a pace race, a qualifying race. By regulation I could not drive more than two hours, but everything went well. From seventh position we recovered to fourth place, which we needed to keep third place in the championship. I am happy to have given this important result to the whole AF Corse team and to Ferrari. The ‘last dance’ of the 488 GTE? I thoroughly enjoyed the final stint here in Bahrain at the wheel of an extraordinary car, which I brought to debut, in which we achieved our first triumph together in the FIA WEC at Silverstone. There’s some melancholy in saying goodbye, but at the same time I feel honoured to be able to drive it over the last kilometres of an extraordinary career.”” commented Davide Rigon, who will be honored this evening (Sunday) during the gala ceremony.
