The Centenary 24 Hours of Spa, valid for the second round of the GT World Challende Europe Endurance Cup Championship, ends with the second place of the number 51 296 GT3 of the AF Corse – Francorchamps Motors team driven to the finish line by Alessandro Pier Guidi, who shared the car with the other official drivers of the Cavallino Rampante Davide Rigon and Alessandro Rovera.
The race, conditioned by rain that caused several crashes and long interruptions (more than twenty Full Course Yellow), saw some of the cars from the Maranello marque remain in the fight for the top positions, overall and class, throughout the night, allowing crews to remain in the top positions when weather conditions allowed them to mount slick tires from Sunday morning.
The event that changed the fortunes of the second act of the GT World Challenge Europe – Endurance Cup occurred when Pier Guidi, having completed 457 laps, with a lead of more than 20 seconds over his pursuers, found the pit lane obstructed by the No. 19 Lamborghini, stopped in the lane. The operations necessary to remove the car, allowing the Ferrari to make its last refueling and then restart, caused the Italian driver to lose more than 40 seconds. Back on the track in eighth place, Pier Guidi was the author of a great finish that allowed him to recover six positions, achieving a podium finish.
Davide Rigon, 296 GT3 #51: “From the beginning of this race we did everything perfectly and finishing in second position, instead of getting a well-deserved win, was like a dream turned into a nightmare. The race was really tough, I think one of the most complex of my life.I’m sorry for the result, but I congratulate my teammates and the whole team.
“The GT WC Europe – Endurance Cup will return to the spotlight with the 3 Hours of Nürburgring, the third event of the season, scheduled for July 27-28.
